Family Cookery

Equipping families to make long lasting changes in their diets by teaching foundational cooking skills and nutrition is proven to help develop resilience against food poverty, poor diet and poor health outcomes.

1 in 2 low income families in the UK skip meals and go hungry because they cannot afford or access food. Nearly 70% of very low income families have had to cut out fresh food from their food shop due to the cost of living crisis.

Children from deprived areas are twice as likely to be obese by age 11 compared to their peers in affluent areas. They also face higher risks of chronic conditions like asthma and type 2 diabetes.

We believe that every family has the right to enjoy affordable, nutritious food.

Food insecurity and poor diet are directly linked to increased rates of poor mental health amongst children, developmental delays and lower educational attainment. Children growing up in the most deprived areas of Leeds will die, on average, 12 years younger than their wealthier peers.

Our Family Cookery Clubs transform families’ diets and help overcome poor nutrition by giving the tools to confidently cook healthy and economical meals from scratch at home while inspiring the whole family to understand the basics of a healthy diet.

Each week we cook a nutritious and easily repeatable recipe together

We provide all the necessary ingredients and equipment, so that every family leaves with a whole meal to eat together at home. We regularly include fun and healthy snacks for children to make as well.

Our sessions include an engaging 6 week nutritional education programme, based around the NHS Eatwell guide, which incorporates food budgeting and meal planning.

100% of the families we have worked with in the last 3 years said they were already repeating our recipes at home, or planned to in future.
